Fair Hill International – The Week Begins
It’s here! It’s here! My favorite horse filled week of the year, The Dutta Corp Fair Hill International CCI** and CCI***. Competition hasn’t even started yet, and I’m already having a blast. Why? Because a team of volunteers, that’s right, unpaid help, have literally taken two giant empty fields and turned them into a small city!
A Small City
What qualifies as a small equestrian themed city? About 10 large tents, a handful of trailers, a fleet of golf carts and gators, multiple dressage rings, a warm up ring, three cross country courses, a kids area, lots of shopping and lots of food venders. And straw…. there are straw bales everywhere!
Where do I fit into all of this? I help with award every year, making sure that the riders get recognized for there hard work. I also help set up the VIP tent, and this year I will be found at VIP admissions, making sure everyone has the right credentials to sit in the good seats.
What’s my favorite part? Last year it was getting everyone in the winners circle to pay attention during the awards ceremony. Its hard work getting the right horses in the right spot at the right time for good pictures. But is all worth it for front row seats for the victory gallop.
My Home Away From Home
I look forward to this week all year long, because I get to spend it at my home away from home! Fair Hill’s beautiful transformed fields. This place is beautiful not just because of how amazing it looks, but because of who I get to share it with. The amazing volunteers that put the event together with me, my beautiful daughter, who proclaims every year that she will win this horse show someday, and the talent! How often do you get to see international athletes, including a few Olympians, gallop around your back yard? Maybe I should start using #eventingnerd on all my posts.
Volunteers Keep The Sport Alive.
What goes into building a small city dedicated to our favorite eventing equines? A year of planning, and lots of hard working volunteers from many backgrounds. 1st year newbies, to volunteer veterans, horse lovers and non horse people.
We come together because we love it, and because there is a sense of family here. Our #FHIFamily.
So! If you make it to the event this weekend, and you should because it is truly amazing, make sure you take some time to shop, eat, watch your favorite riders, and THANK A VOLUNTEER! Because there would be no show without them.
Not sure what to do this weekend? We have something for everyone! Dressage for two days. On Saturday there is a 5K, a beer tent and cross country jumping. Sunday is stadium jumping, awards and more shopping and food. The full schedule can be found online on Fair Hill International’s website.
Want to get in for free? We are always taking new members of the #FHIFamily, and it is never to late to sign up! Email me, I can tell you how, firstname.lastname@example.org
Hope to see you there! #GoEventing #GoVolunteer
